Institutional Memberships

The Tepoztlán Institute is mainly funded through registration fees by participants. We have a sliding scale of fees based on income, and also provide fellowships to Latin American-based participants who would not normally be able to afford the travel expenses or registration fees. We have relied, in summary, on institutional memberships to be able to create a balance of US and Latin American participants. Some of our long term partnerships include Lewis and Clark College, New York University, the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), the University of Indiana, Yale University, and the University of Kansas.  This model has ensured that the Institute remains truly transnational in both, the nature of the research and scholarship we support, and the make-up and institutional membership of its participants. 

Participation in the Institute remains highly competitive, in order to ensure that all participants are able to interact with colleagues, and to receive quality feedback on their research during the duration of the institute.  We have different levels of institutional membership that guarantee the entry of graduate students and/or faculty members from your institution. Institutional membership also translates into our promotional materials, and by extension, in publications from scholars, who acknowledge the Institute for its support of their research. 

Given that directors and collective members provide their labor voluntarily, we have a zero overhead cost for the Institute. The scholarship for one year provides the participant(s) with accommodation, food (2 meals x day), and access to all conference facilities during the duration of the weeklong Institute. Institutional membership options:

Institutional Membership of $1,000:

Option a. Guaranteed admission of ONE faculty member from the institution for two successive

      years.  

Option b. Guaranteed admission and full scholarship to the Institute for ONE graduate student. 

Institutional Membership of $2,000:

Option a. Guaranteed admission for TWO faculty members from the institution per year for two

      successive annual Institutes. 

Option b. Guaranteed admission and full scholarship for one faculty. 

Option c. Guaranteed admission of one faculty, AND guaranteed admission and full scholarship for one graduate student. 

Note: Institutions may add $1,000 to either of the membership options above to cover the costs for additional graduate students, or $2,000 to cover the participation of additional faculty members. The Institute only accepts graduate students in the advanced phases of their Ph.D. (ABD). Although not at all the norm given the varied nature of institutions of higher education,  the Tepoztlán Institute is particularly enriching for graduate students who participate along with their faculty mentor/advisor.
