FEES

The fee to participate in the Tepoztlán Institute covers an intensive week of workshops, presentations, performances, and other activities, seven days of housing and meals (breakfast and lunch, as well as a dinner on the opening night and at the cabaret), translations of most common readings, simultaneous language interpretation, and logistics coordination. We are an all-volunteer force- all of the co-directors and collective members work for free, all year long. We constantly seek institutional memberships to keep participant costs low. For the rest, we need your registration fees. Thank you so much for paying them. The Institute is committed to a broad participation and offers travel grants and fee subsidies for Latin America-based scholars, artists, and activists, and to U.S.-based activists, based on need, to ensure that all admitted participants may attend.

We have a dual pay structure - one for US/Europe/Canada - based academics, independent scholars and activists, and another for Latin America- based scholars and activists. Based on the scale below, participants will indicate the fee appropriate to them.

N. B. Please base your calculation on the salary you earned last year. Convert yearly total salaries (including base salary and research funds) to USD.

The evil credit card companies make us pay 3% for using their cards so if you can, pay by check. If you do not have access to checks or credit cards, please either give cash to a friend who has those technologies and have them pay in your name, or if you know and trust a collective member, ask that person to pay on your behalf, and pay them back in person.

***Please Note: In recent years, the average cost that the Tepoztlán Institute incurs per participant has risen to over $900 USD. Of that sum, approximately 60% goes to housing and facilities, and approximately 25% goes to the local families who prepare participants’ meals. Our fee structure is designed to ensure that applicants with limited resources are able to attend.

**Graduate students based in Latin America who do not receive research funds from their institutions, or whose travel funds are minimal, may ask for a fee reduction to $100. We strongly encourage those students to ask for this reduction.

Rates for independent scholars and activists are the same as the ones above. However, both Latin America- and U.S.-based activists and independent scholars who need reduced fees should note that in their application and pursue the matter by email if necessary.

The Institute is committed to helping Latin America-based scholars and activists and U.S.-based activists to participate in the week-long programming, so these applicants are encouraged to note fee reduction requests in the relevant place on the application. Please explain the circumstances that require you to request a fee reduction.

After the application is accepted, please direct questions to tepoinstitute@gmail.com. We will do all we can to determine a fee that is attentive and responsive to your financial circumstances. There are no fee reductions for partial attendance or for arranging independent housing. All accepted participants must attend the full week of the Institute's activities, without exceptions.

Donations to support other scholars are most welcome. U.S.-based scholars at institutions who have research accounts: please consider topping off your fees to help us achieve equity at the Institute. You will get more out of a conference that has a better balance of Latin America- and U.S.-based participants!

If you can possibly add $100-$200 to your registration fee to supplement the fee reductions and travel grants the Institute can offer to Latin America-based participants, please do so, and note what you have given in the appropriate place on the application.
